I have blogged about the awesomeness that is QGIS Server before. Maybe you have seen some of the nice maps that Andreas Neumann has made in Uster, Switzerland. Over the past 3 months we were contracted to help prototyping a new mapping service for the Norwegian Trekking Association. We really got a chance to put QGIS Server (and the new QGIS Web Client project) through its paces. Why not take a little look for yourself. We had quite a lot of fun optimising the client’s data set for good performance and generally making sure everything works smoothly.

Note:

- the site is still a test site, but the fine folks from Norway gave me the OK to let people take it for a whirl.
- we have not yet implemented search support.
- We made a bunch of different print layouts for you to try out!

It’s now incredibly easy to get your QGIS cartography online. In the near future I plan to test out techniques for tilecaching with QGIS Server and once that works it will be the end of the line for my 11+ year love affair with UMN Mapserver for the most part I think.

    Hi Tim,

This is great news for Qgis users to know that we can serve maps using a WMS capabilities through QGIS Server. I would like to try this for my job because we are looking a way o share some geospatial information to a group of users about sites contaminated. Just I’m wondering what a about performances using wms qgis wms server??? The wms server would be published on a Intranet system of my organization.

I would be happy to heard about you about performances.

      Hi

In my experience performance is very good….but of course like any other WMS it very much depends what you are trying to do and how well you have set up your map project. You can typically expect the server responses to be faster than you your desktop would render, all other things being equal. In short, there is never a better time to give it a try!

It’ an amazing results with very easy tools. I’am trying to do similar however I have 2 problem. The first one is that in order to show my map I need to have the same srs on globaloption.js, and qgis project. The problem is that i can have different project with different srs and so i need to change all the time the srs in the globaloption.js file.Is it a mistake of me or a real limitatiin ?
    Thank you by advance.

      Hi

In the case of using different srs, as far as I know there is no ‘out of the box’ support in the qgis web client – you need to create two separate instances. However a little bit of javascript hacking should be able to address this.

      Regards

      Tim
